The short answer

Use 1080 × 1350px (a 4:5 ratio) for every slide. It's the tallest shape Instagram shows in the feed for a carousel, so your post takes up the most screen. All slides in one carousel must be the same size.

FormatRatioSize in pixelsWhen to use it
Portrait4:51080 × 1350Default for almost everything. Most space in the feed.
Vertical (grid shape)3:41080 × 1440Matches the profile grid exactly, so nothing gets trimmed there.
Square1:11080 × 1080Classic look, photo dumps, product shots.
Landscape1.91:11080 × 566Wide photos. Takes up the least space in the feed, so use it rarely.

Instagram displays posts at 1080px wide. You can upload larger files, but they're scaled down, so 1080px wide is all you need. Export as JPG or PNG. PNG keeps text sharper. JPG keeps photos small.

The first slide sets the size for the rest

Instagram crops every slide to the ratio of the first one. If slide one is square and slide two is 4:5, slide two gets its top and bottom cut off. Design all slides at the same size and you never have to think about this.

Your profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 thumbnail (it changed from squares in early 2025). The first slide of your carousel is what appears there, cropped from the centre:

Your slideWhat the grid keepsWhat gets trimmed
1080 × 1350 (4:5)the centre 1012 × 1350about 34px off the left and right
1080 × 1440 (3:4)the whole slidenothing
1080 × 1080 (1:1)the centre 810 × 1080135px off the left and right

So for a 4:5 slide, keep headlines and faces at least 50px from the left and right edges. For square slides, leave about 150px.

The safe zone for text

Beyond the grid crop, Instagram lays its own interface over the post in a few places: the "1/8" counter in the top-right corner, the dots under the image, and tags when someone taps. A comfortable rule for a 1080 × 1350 slide:

  • Keep text inside a 960 × 1200px box in the middle (60px margin on the sides, 75px top and bottom).
  • Don't put anything important in the top-right corner.
  • Use a text size of at least 40px for body text. Most people read carousels on a phone held at arm's length.

A seamless carousel is one wide image that continues from slide to slide. Multiply the slide width by the number of slides:

SlidesTotal canvas at 4:5Total canvas at 1:1
22160 × 13502160 × 1080
33240 × 13503240 × 1080

55400 × 13505400 × 1080

Design on the full canvas, then cut it into 1080px-wide pieces. The free seamless carousel maker does the cutting for you and tells you how much of your photo gets trimmed. There's more on design in how to make a seamless Instagram carousel.

Up to 20 photos or videos. Photos and videos can be mixed, and every item follows the first slide's ratio. See how to post more than 20 photos if you need more.

Does the same size work on LinkedIn?

Yes. LinkedIn "document" carousels are uploaded as a PDF, and 1080 × 1350 pages display well there too. You can convert an Instagram carousel to a LinkedIn PDF without redesigning it.

Skip the sizing entirely

Every carousel made in InstaCarousel is exported at 1080 × 1350px with text kept inside the safe zone, whether it starts from a YouTube video, a blog post or a template.
